How do you use Twitter?

Twitter has become immensely popular over the last few years, and has now become a major player for internet marketing. However, with that popularity, there are inherent problems such as how do you stand out among the million odd users that log on daily.

As a web professional I am constantly bombarded with social media techniques, everybody has the answer. I however do not.

I can see how Twitter presents huge possibilities but I do not like the way 90% of the people are now using it. Too many people are using it to just spam their own content or systems to other users.

I absolutely hate spam! In fact, if I find one of the people I am following sends anything remotely spammy, I immediately un-follow them, and I am pretty sure I am not the only one.

So the question still remains what is the best way to use Twitter for a business?

I really think that there is only one answer here, but many ways to accomplish it. Build your Reputation. That is it. I would like to know your ideas on how to build the best reputation on twitter. I will start it off with this:

Give more than you get


Whether it is re-tweeting other peoples web sites, or simply answering their questions, this is a good way to build goodwill.

    Twitter seemed like such a great idea in the beginning and then it ended up being another task to take care of. What do I use it for – to advertise new blog entries, when I have time to actually write them (have time or make time but that is a different question).

    Time – these social networking tools seem to take a lot of time. Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn – you know I’d actually like to have one that is interconnected and then I only have to enter the information once. Because the more I enter it in different networks, the more I realize how self promoting the information can be. Not a bad thing if you are actually running a business and using them as marketing tools but for personal use. Ugh – how much of YOU does the world really need?

    Now I have tried syncing my various social networks but then I find I use them for different purposes. I’ve tried Twitter for educational purposes. I had this brainstorm a year ago that Twitter could be a great tool for my (university & college) students – I could use it to remind them of upcoming deadlines. However, only one student signed up for it. Why? Most of them (if they use Twitter at all) use it for PERSONAL rather than professional or educational purposes (and these were business majors).

    So for me Twitter is a largely ignored tool. Second after Facebook in my personal use rankings (followed by MySpace and LinkedIn) – at first I used it daily but I’ve lost interest in the last 9 months.
